BODENFORUM ÖSTERREICH – SPRING MEETING 2024
May 15, 2024 – May 16, 2024
Innsbruck, Austria
The Federal Environmental Agency, the Austrian Society for Soil Science (ÖBG) and the Land of Tyrol invite you to the spring meeting of the Austrian Soil Forum to be held on 15 and 16 May 2024 in Innsbruck. The Soil Forum has been held twice a year in Austria since 2002 and offers all interested parties an established format for exchanging information, communicating and discussing current soil issues. The Soil Forum creates interfaces to other topics that are important for soil protection, such as spatial planning or geology.
THEME: Soil value – total soil value
Healthy and fertile soils are the basis for food production and thus for security of supply. Changes caused by climate change, management or soil conditions have an impact on soil productivity. Our floors, and the functions they perform, are a valuable asset. This includes a wide range of technical aspects to address the topic of ‘soil value’.

The Mission Soil
As part of the EU Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’, the European Commission launched the Mission Soil Manifesto, which calls for action to respond to the urgent need to protect and improve soil health in Europe and beyond. Sign the Manifesto as a representative of a legal entity or as an individual and stand up for soil health!
You will join a community that cares about soil, have the chance to network with others and be informed about the latest research results and activities of Mission Soil.

New publications
New video on soil description and soil classification
Peter Schad and Chris Just from the Technical University of Munich (Germany) made a new video on Soil Description and Soil Classification. It uses the 4th edition of the World Refefence Base for Soil Resources (WRB). The description is according to the new WRB Field Guide (Annex 1 of the WRB Manual – replacing for WRB the FAO Guidelines for Soil Description, 2006) and the classification considers the new WRB edition. It is available here: https://wrb.isric.org/teaching-material/.
During COVID, the authors were unable to go on field trips with the students and therefore produced some videos: in German the description according to the German field manual and the classification according to the German national soil classification, and in English and Spanish according to the FAO Guidelines for Soil Description (2006) and the 3rd edition of the WRB (2015). They were published on their university’s teaching platform in 2020. In 2022, their institution created a YouTube channel and they were published there too: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-dL7jrqhzwoFfKNLTwGXxQ.

Descriptive text: Quantitative assessments of the effects of global change on soil development are mostly focused on soil carbon, some nutrients, pollutants and soil water. Soil, however, is a complex entity with interacting biological, physical and chemical processes that are rarely modelled in their entirety. Additionally, for the sake of simplicity various soil properties are considered constants whereas in reality they are not. Soil as we observe it is the resultant of many processes driven by varying boundary conditions such as climate and organisms including men. This is not different when we study global change, thus modelling soil development under global change overlaps with modelling soil formation. This book gives an overview of what such a model should entail, with ample descriptions to use SoilGen, a simulation model to study pedogenesis.
Micro- and nanoplastics in soil ecosystems: Analytical methods, fate, and effects
By: Yu Wang, Leilei Xiang, Wulf Amelung, Martin Elsner, Jay Gan, Stephan Kueppers, Laforsch Christian, Xin Jiang, Joseph Adu-Gyamfi, Lee Heng, Yong Sik Ok, Natalia P. Ivleva, Yongming Luo, Damià Barceló, Andreas Schäffer, Fang Wang. TrAC Trends in Analytical Chemistry, Volume 169, 2023, 117309

ISSN 0165-9936, Published by Elsevier, December 2023
Descriptive text: As emerging contaminants, microplastics and nanoplastics (MPs/NPs) are increasingly widespread in soil environment. The present paper reviews available analytical methods for detecting MPs/NPs in soil and plants, and examines the migration processes of MPs/NPs at multiple interfaces as well as the potential toxic effects of MPs/NPs.

EUSEDcollab: a network of data from European catchments to monitor net soil erosion by water.
Francis Matthews et al.
By: Francis Matthews et al.
Ed. Scientific data, August 2023, pp.11
Doi :https://doi.org/10.1038/s41597-023-02393-8
Descriptive text: A network of researchers release an open-access database (EUSEDcollab) of water discharge and suspended sediment yield time series records collected in small to medium sized catchments in Europe. EUSEDcollab is compiled to overcome the scarcity of open-access data at relevant spatial scales for studies on runoff, soil loss by water erosion and sediment delivery. Across ten European countries, EUSEDcollab covers over 1600 catchment years of data from 245 catchments at event (11 catchments), daily (22 catchments) and monthly (212 catchments) temporal resolution and is unique in its focus on small to medium catchment drainage areas (median = 43 km2, min = 0.04 km2, max = 817 km2) with applicability for soil erosion research. The aim of uniting people, knowledge, and data through the European Union Soil Observatory (EUSO).
