1924 Proceedings of the Fourth International Conference of Pedology

The conference proceedings were published by the International Institute of Agriculture (IIA) in Rome and were intended to serve as a milestone in the advancement of soil science, producing three volumes and one annex for a total of around 2,000 pages. Besides the report of the general secretary, the Proceedings are organized into three sections:

  1. i) Summaries of communications
  2. ii) Illustrative notes regarding the soil excursions

iii) Conferences, notes, and communications to be included in the Proceedings

These proceedings documented the presentations, discussions, and scientific contributions shared during the conference. Over time, these proceedings have become a significant reference point, providing a comprehensive account of the progress made in soil science up to 1924.

“They serve as a valuable resource for researchers, academics, and practitioners seeking to understand the historical development and evolution of soil science.”

SUITMA upgrades to Commission

In the late summer of 2023, the Working Group (WK) SUITMA (soils of urban, industrial, traffic, mining and military areas), established in 1998 during the 16th WCSS held in Montpellier, thanks to profs. W. Burghardt and J. L. Morel, have applied to become a Commission. This WK has a long and successful history having organized 12 conferences in 11 different countries, 7 symposia during different WCSS, and published a book in 2017, “Soils within cities – Global approaches to their sustainable management”; and several special issues of Journal of Soils and Sediments. The application was successfully approved by the Executive Committee and by the Council as well.

New video on soil description and soil classification

Peter Schad and Chris Just from the Technical University of Munich (Germany) made a new video on Soil Description and Soil Classification. It uses the 4th edition of the World Refefence Base for Soil Resources (WRB). The description is according to the new WRB Field Guide (Annex 1 of the WRB Manual – replacing for WRB the FAO Guidelines for Soil Description, 2006) and the classification considers the new WRB edition. It is available here: https://wrb.isric.org/teaching-material/

During COVID, we produced some videos in German: the description according to the German field handbook and the classification according to the German national soil classification and, in English and Spanish, according to the FAO Guidelines for Soil Description (2006) and the 3rd edition of the WRB (2015).

They were published on the teaching platform of our university in 2020 and in 2022 our institute established a youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-dL7jrqhzwoFfKNLTwGXxQ.

Represents a unique opportunity to preserve the memory of the Italian history of soil science. Bridges between the pioneers of soil science in Italy and the young generation of researchers. Constitutes a milestone in Italian cultural heritage.

History is generally defined as “the study of past events, particularly in human affairs” and is mostly understood when presented chronologically. That’s why someone also defined it as the ‘chronological record of the past’. Knowing the past is extremely important for any society and human beings. The past gives us insights into our evolving behavior in many matters of life. The book is seen as a unique opportunity to preserve the memory of the Italian history of soil science. It represents a milestone and a cultural heritage. Moreover, the book is a sort of ideal bridge between the pioneers of soil science in Italy and the young generation of researchers, contributing to spreading awareness of the importance of soil as a fundamental resource.

Descriptive text: Agriculture soil is precious and limited resources irreversible degradation of this resource implies not only ruining the main assets of current farmers, but also reducing the farming opportunities of future generations. Therefore, soil protection policies need to have a special focus on sustainable use and management of agricultural soils with a view to safeguarding the fertility and agronomic values of agricultural land. The book has been written in concise and in simple understandable English so that aspirants of competitive examination in soil science specially benefitted. Since soil science is a major discipline in the field of agriculture. The ASRB conducted NET, ARS examination time to time for soil science as a major subject. The Author hopes that the efforts of preparing the book Soil Science: A Competitive Approach will be fulfilled as it will help the students of Soil science. This will also prove an important reference for state agriculture universities, institutions, libraries, bookshelves, etc.

Title: Healing soil: How soil health will save the planet and us

By: Bruce C Ball.

ISBN: 978-1-7395931-0-0 Paperback

Connecting people to soil for a better future

Using his own artworks and drawing on his soil science research, Bruce Ball reveals the importance of soil to humanity. Structured in three main parts, his book takes us on a journey from the nature of healthy soil, through the influence of soil on our health and food to its hidden contributions to our society and our planet. In Healing Soil, you can discover: How soil works, what makes it healthy and how it affects your health. How healthy soil helps combat climate change, environmental pollution and biodiversity loss while allowing sustainable production of nutritious food. How a soil-based view of the world, and parallels between soil and our lives, can help us arrive at the cultural and spiritual transformation needed for a sustainable society. Your own road to a healthy and sustainable life using practical and meditative exercises on soil, helped by a visual soil health chart and a wealth of references that allow you to reflect and build on what you unearth in the book. Contributions are also included from farmers, former students, scientists, a theologian and a community worker who the author encountered in his esteemed 35-year career in soil science. Professor Pete Smith, University of Aberdeen, award-winning climate change scientist and soils expert, states ‘this labor of love will inform and enchant its readers, be they knowledgeable environmental scientists, or people learning about soil for the first time.
